The diversity of languages is one of the main barriers to international trade and a cause of relative isolation for parts of the population. Retaining and supporting this diversity is a determining factor for social and political cohesion within the European Union. European support in the field of language engineering will help to realise and exploit fully the potential of language technologies (LT). Core infocycle tools include: terminology management, for control over use of language at all stages of the infocycle; authoring and author memory, introducing discipline into the creation of information, and reducing redundant re-authoring; translation memory, for near-complete leveraging of existing multilingual material; machine translation, for fully automated translation-possible as a result of using other core tools. Tools which are co-ordinated with these core technologies to implement the infocycle include: document/Web repositories, for versioning and multilingual alignment of information elements; document management to control the use of information elements; multi-platform publishing tools to generate information for different delivery platforms, formats, audiences, environments; information retrieval engines to improve accessibility of digital information; and comprehension aids to assist in multilingual access. - Author(s): G. Over the last decade there has been an exponential growth in mechatronics and intelligent systems activity, a growth which has led to the development of exciting new products which are in everyday use. The article traces the origins of mechatronics and demonstrates how the concept has grown from its beginnings in Japanese manufacturing industry to become universally accepted as an important enabling methodology for improved product design and profitability. The parallel development of the intelligent systems paradigms of fuzzy logic, artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms are also discussed and it is shown how the two subjects have become inexorably linked. The overall aim of the article is to demonstrate how the synergistic combination of these two areas has provided the driving force for innovative applications ranging from cameras and domestic washing machines to motor vehicles, ships and industrial processes. - Author(s): S.R. Within the European Community, the elderly community is growing, and consequently there has been a significant increase in the need for the provision of assistance to carers, with family carers in general playing a central role in most activities of informal care in the community. This type of care is based on a strong liaison between informal carers, the professionals and the frail, elderly or disabled person(s) who are the focus of care. Services like videoconferencing, multimedia information, bespoke programs can help the carers in their daily work. ACTION is a European funded project in healthcare telematics. The electronic design, test and application of a PCI-SCI bridge supporting shared memory, message passing and DMA is described. The objectives for designing a bridge between the IEEE 1596 SCI standard and the popular PCI bus were applications in high energy physics where large scale processor farms are needed to process large amounts of data in real time. The SCI's shared memory paradigm is particularly attractive for such multiprocessor applications. The functional units of the bridge, including PCI target and master are programmed into FPGAs. These functions are developed in VHDL and then simulated, synthesised, placed and routed using advanced FPGA development tools. Sustainable decision making stands for decision making which contributes to a sustainable society. It should take into account developmental, environmental, social, technical and economic factors. Different models of decision making are presented and discussed in the context of sustainable decision making. The appropriateness of existing decision support systems for sustainable decision making is considered. Examples from the areas of water resources and energy planning and management are presented to illustrate some of the main issues.
