Data convergence is the overall connecting of building control devices by allowing formerly non-interactive agents to share and use common information. Convergence can be best achieved through open control networks; as integration is the key to information exchange. Integration at the building level means access to information. One classical implementation of closed loop feedback control is the flyball centrifugal governor invented in 1788 by James Watt to regulate the speed of steam engines. A feedback control system that employs all three terms - proportional control, derivative control and integral control is known as a PID loop, or lead-lag compensator, and is widely used in process industries. Segway, multiple gyroscopes provide the input signals to several PID loops, some of which are nested inside others. The Segway has the advantage over most inverted pendulum problems. The wheels are oriented in parallel to give it a zero turning circle. In addition to gyroscopes, it uses fluidic tilt sensors. A low-pass filter keeps the system stable, and the integral term is added to rack out any accumulated error. Airbus recently completed a major research project that is resulting in greater levels of automated drilling within the aerospace giant. As Airbus's build rate is set to increase to meet market demand, it has sought to cut levels of manual processing and bring a flexible, low-cost robotic platform into the aerospace industry. The system is already in action at the Filton plant in the UK and the company says the process is already reducing costs, cutting production time and improving quality. The Airbus team has brought together two developmental partners, KUKA and M3 to address the problem. 3D laser scanning is portable, amazingly fast and enables the creation of astonishingly revealing 3D models. Lasers have been used in measurement for 20 or 30 years. The production control system provides control of all functions of the subsea production system. Conventionally, subsea functions include operation and control of: down hole, safety valves, subsea chokes, production valves mounted on the x-mas tree and utility functions such as monitoring of fluid characteristics, pressure leakage, valve positions, etc. The subsea system comprises a wellhead, valve tree (x-mas tree) equipment, pipelines, structures and piping systems among others. In many cases a number of wellheads have to be controlled from a single location. The control system provides operation of valves and chokes on subsea completions, templates, manifolds and pipelines. The design of a control system must also provide a means for safe shutdown on failure of equipments or loss of electrical/hydraulic control from the topside (a platform or floating facility) and other safety features that automatically prevent dangerous events. Presently there are no tools for early fault detection and diagnosis in the subsea control systems area. Troubleshooting and fault finding are normally performed with procedures when the fault is already affecting the system performance and, in most cases finding the root cause of the fault is not straight forward. This fact affects subsea operations and does not provide any support for maintenance plans.
