  The author was responsible for the team which developed the DUCT CADCAM system at the University of Cambridge and is a partner in the firm of Weber CAM GmbH, which programs for the pattern-and mould-making shop Firma August Weber Modellbau in Hildesheim, Germany. This article discusses why CADCAM is so little used in the mechanical engineering industry and why designers use CAD systems with little understanding of CAM. Until design and manufacturing directors have a common policy, progress will remain slow.

  Owing to the complexity of certain tasks, in particular those within a hazardous environment, there is a perceived need for robotic systems to have two-armed flexibility. The practical realisation of a teleoperated two-armed manipulator system raises a number of problems regarding operation and control. Of particular note is the problem of collision avoidance between the arms in real-time. A review of current techniques has shown a reliance on accurate knowledge, both of the environment and of the manipulator. Whereas collision avoidance with the environment will depend on sensors and the operator's skill, that between the two arms can be best left to the robot's controls system. A possible solution for collision avoidance is presented, which depends on the individual links of the manipulators being modelled as a number of spheres.
A framework for design and development of real-time IKBS applications

  A framework for the design and development of real-time and software fault-tolerant intelligent knowledge-based system (IKBS) is described. It uses an extended notation of structured analysis/structured design (SA/SD) to identify and analyse the requirements, and to arrive at a set of data and control transformations. This set forms the background to identify and describe a set of objects, in the sense of object-oriented programming (OOP), and a set of rules to manipulate these objects in realising the dynamic behaviour of the IKBS application. Thus, it provides a mapping of different concepts of real-time SA/SD onto OOP and IKBS. The framework also identifies two strategies to incorporate software fault tolerance in an object-oriented perspective, and prescribes ‘progressive reasoning’ to meet the real-time needs of the application.
Design of an expert system for generating optimal assembly sequences

  Basically, an assembly process is a sequence of positioning and fixing in position between the parts of the system to be assembled. However, finding this sequence automatically remains a very complex procedure because of the combinational aspect of the problem. The conventional programming methods of generating the ordered sequence cannot satisfy the modern factory requirements. The new approach, which seems more promising, considers artificial intelligence techniques and particularly the knowledge-based systems concept. This article presents the design of an expert system for assembly planning, with a description of all its components.
