As the use of CAE becomes more widespread, there is an increasing need for thetransfer of data between systems in electronic machine-readable form. The CADCAM Data Exchange Technical Centre at Leeds has been set up to help firms transfer product specification data from one CAD system to another.

A multi-process £4.5 million flexible manufacturing system to manufacture a variety of sub-assemblies for Holset Engineering has been under development for over two years. The system uses a range of sophisticated machines, seven gantry type robots, an AGV transport system and numerous computer controls. Holset has taken the unique approach of conducting the project management itself, specifying its exact requirements to equipment suppliers. This paper discusses the reasons for end users considering this approach, the disadvantages in not accepting project responsibility, and the lessons learned by the Holset FMS project team from developing a user-oriented system.

A little customised software can substantially increase the benefits to be gained from a general-purpose CADCAM system. Often only relatively modest costs are involved. This article considers some typical applications for customising, the need for data links with other systems and some design and development issues.

Historically, manufacturing methods for thin sheet metal components have been governed by the machine tool technology available. The advent of integrated CADCAM systems makes possible new methods that encompass production control geared to automation and the minimisation of batch sizes. This article describes a computer system that makes it possible to manufacture sheet metal components to order in small batches, without wastage of material, additional manpower or loss of production priorities. The machining sequence for a component is defined against a job number, and is queued in priority order according to material, thickness and tooling requirements. From these queues the system automatically generates NC programs for nested sheets with optimised machining across the sheet.
