It is shown that the ideas of f.d.m. originated with Alexander Graham Bell around 1870 and were formulated as an f.d.m. telephone system by Leblanc in 1886. Amplitude modulation of a carrier by speech probably originated also with Leblanc in 1886. The existence of sidebands (or sidetones) was demonstrated experimentally by Mayer in 1875 and theoretically by Rayleigh in 1894, but was not known to the early radio and telephone engineers, being apparently rediscovered in 1915. The main developments up to about 1920 are briefly discussed.
