The paper discusses the requirements for information processing system components, drawing attention to the parallel manner in which systems and components evolve. A short survey follows of optical techniques which may be applied to digital storage, and of systems wh ich have been produced in the past. Finally, suggestions are made as to optical storage systems which should have very desirable characteristics.
