The paper shows how the technique of step-phase modulation can be used to obtain a two-speed shaded-pole induction motor. An analysis is presented that allows prediction of the performance of such a machine, and the validity of the analysis is verified by the experimental work presented. A simple technique of design, based on a numerical-optimisation routine, is introduced, and an improved design is theoretically compared with the original, using the above analysis.
