This study focuses on the self-starting strategy of variable speed pumped storage units (VSPSU) by shorting machine stator. First, the mathematical model and characteristics of VSPSU are proposed, while the machine stator is short-circuited. Then, a closed-loop self-starting system based on model predictive control is presented in order to accelerate the rotor for synchronisation. For verification, a VSPSU model is built in MATLAB/Simulink, and the simulations regarding the start-up and synchronisation procedure are carried out. The results show that with the proposed self-starting strategy, it is possible to obtain good starting performance and robustness.
