Chip making companies are belatedly preparing themselves for the widespread use of database-driven tools. A central database would do little to reduce the amount of data needed to describe a chip, but would dispense with the need to read all the data in and write it all back out again whenever a change needs to be made. The database management system takes care of the accesses, fetching only the relevant data.

Inspec keywords: circuit CAD; integrated circuit design; very large databases

Other keywords: database-driven tools; data accesses; chip design; database management system; central database

Subjects: Semiconductor integrated circuit design, layout, modelling and testing; Other DBMS; Computer-aided circuit analysis and design; Electronic engineering computing
