Limitations in the noise performance of untuned active monopoles are discussed with respect to their low radiation resistance. The noise performance of tuned active monopoles is analysed and shown to be much superior to the untuned monopole. The method of analysis is based on lumped equivalent circuits for both antenna and amplifier, and a figure of merit for comparing the noise performance of passive and active antennas is proposed. Experimental results for the noise output of λ/20 and λ/10 tuned active monopoles are presented to confirm the analysis
