access icon free Design of an optical temperature transmitter for inflammable industry

Measurement and transmission of temperature in industries are generally done by different conventional sensors like RTD, thermocouple, thermistor etc. that involve many limitations like high cost, temperature compensation and suffers from non-linearity problems. Hence, a temperature sensing unit using AD590 temperature sensor is developed which is low cost, does not require any temperature compensation and exhibit linear characteristic. Furthermore, the signal transmission through electrical communication system is not acceptable through hazardous and inflammable areas and, therefore, optical transmission is being more acceptable as the signal does not alter due to electromagnetic interference and is free from explosions due to electric spark. So an optical communication technique has been proposed based on MZI. The proposed transmitter has been analysed theoretically, and the equations has been derived. The experiment has been performed on the fabricated prototype unit. The experimental and simulation results are presented in the paper which shows linear characteristic of the unit with very good repeatability and follows the theoretical equations.
