This article discusses emotional intelligence in robots built for the purpose of human-robot interaction and companionship. Emotion AI (artificial intelligence) techniques such as facial expression classification through machine learning, computer vision and deep learning, acoustic prosodic feature analysis in speech, and sensor-based emotion recognition are reviewed alongside current robots exhibiting these capabilities. Human feelings for robots are also touched on along with examples of some robot pets. Some worries regarding the future of these robots is expressed, but with the inabilities of the current robots to differentiate between different reasons for the same facial expression or voice feature, and the incorporation of an off switch for emotion AI models, these issues in most part can be mitigated.
