This article presents issues concerning the achievement of ignition through inertial confinement fusion at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). These include the optimization of laser energy delivery, hohlraum design, and tritium fuel breeding. Magnetic confinement fusion, as an alternative to laser fusion, is also discussed as well as efforts towards a future commercial fusion reactor.
