This paper discusses the IceCube array which is a telescope encased in ice up to 2.4 km below the surface at the South Pole in a 1 km cube. It will become the largest particle detector in the world. The overall design relies heavily on commercial computing and networking hardware and software from the e-commerce and Web services industry rather than process control. While construction should be finished in January 2011, commissioning and verification, and calibration and full integration with the DAQ will take a further three months. After that, IceCube is expected to deliver data for some time to come.
