A high electromagnetic susceptibility (EMS) and low-cost plastic package for a 10 Gbit/s optical transceiver module is developed using a woven carbon-fibre epoxy composite. The shielding effectiveness of the proposed package can reach about 70 dB for 1.5 mm package thickness at 10 GHz. The EMS performance of the package is experimentally evaluated by the eye patterns and bit error rate test. The packaged optical module significantly enhances the signal quality with maximum eye opening and rise time improvement of 12.65% and 5.76%, respectively. The proposed package is suitable for use in low-cost and high EMS 10 Gbit/s optical transmission systems.
