A new type of piezoelectric transformer which is capable of higher power density than currently known conventional types is presented. It is also capable of multiple voltage outputs. The transformer is made from lead zirconate titanate and is based on the k15 thickness shear vibration mode. This is the first reported case of such vibration mode being used to achieve high-power low-voltage piezoelectric transformers. Experimental characteristics of the prototype are reported. Such transformers are expected to find applications in automotive electronics and telecommunication power supplies.
