The performance of an acousto-optic based 8-to-8 vector-matrix switch is reported. The feasibility of cascading multichannel acousto-optic cells is experimentally investigated for the first time. Characterisation is carried out from fibre to fibre with BER measurement at 10 Gbit/s and exhibits no crosstalk effects within WDM C-bandwidth, low polarisation sensitivity and fast switching.

Inspec keywords: optical crosstalk; photonic switching systems; error statistics; acousto-optical switches; wavelength division multiplexing

Other keywords: bit error rate; low polarisation sensitivity; optical crossconnect; 10 Gbit/s; WDM C-bandwidth; crosstalk effects; multichannel acousto optic cells; 8 to 8 vector matrix switch; wavelength division multiplexing; BER measurement

Subjects: Optical communication equipment; Acousto-optical devices; Other topics in statistics; Photonic switching systems; Multiplexing and switching in optical communication
