A three-dimensional (3-D) manipulation system for micro droplets generated on-demand is presented. This newly developed system using focused trapping laser beams is able to manipulate pico- to femtolitre (that is, micron-sized) droplets independently and directly. The capability of the system is demonstrated by aligning oil droplets in water. Dependence of the volume of generated droplets on some control parameters is also described.
