A computationally efficient scheme suitable for the estimation of sub-pixel motion in video sequences is presented. The scheme is based on the maximisation of the cross-correlation function between spatial gradient information derived from a pair of images. The proposed scheme is highly accurate, outperforms established frequency-domain motion estimation methods and is considerably more immune to noise.
