A novel method for optical subcarrier label generation is proposed and demonstrated with a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator performing carrier-suppressed modulation. An optical signal consisting of a 10 Gbit/s payload and a 156 Mbit/s label was generated, and its performance was evaluated in a 50 km standard fibre transmission link.

Inspec keywords: optical modulation; multiprotocol label switching; optical fibre communication; subcarrier multiplexing; Mach-Zehnder interferometers

Other keywords: multiprotocol label switching; standard fibre transmission link; 156 Mbit/s; dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator; optical subcarrier label generation; 10 Gbit/s; carrier suppression technique; 50 km

Subjects: Multiplexing and switching in optical communication
