Experimental results are reported of thermal emission from tantalum surfaces having a two-dimensional periodic array of microcavities. Thermal emission from such surfaces has clear peaks caused by two different resonances of electromagnetic waves. It is found that the physical origin of the resonant peaks changes when the aperture ratio of the surface increases.

Inspec keywords: periodic structures; surface electromagnetic waves; surface plasmon resonance; microcavities; emissivity; polaritons; tantalum

Other keywords: relative spectral emissivity; Ta surfaces; resonant peaks; two-dimensional periodic array; electromagnetic wave resonances; Ta; microcavity periodic array; thermal emission; thermally excited surface plasmon polaritons; surface aperture ratio

Subjects: Collective excitations (surface states); Polaritons; Other topics in thermal properties of condensed matter
