The implementation of the optical frequency domain reflectometry technique to characterise S-band Tm-doped fibre amplifiers (TDFA) is described. Using this non-destructive method, the gain-length product for a TDFA can be optimised against pump power. Insight into the distributed gain dynamics in the TDFA is also obtained.
