A coherent model of cladding Brillouin scattering (CBS) is proposed. This model describes both the so-called (spontaneous) guided acoustic wave Brillouin scattering (GAWBS) in the low field limit, and the ‘long-range acoustic interaction’ observed in solitonic fibre transmissions. The coupling of CBS with the optical Kerr effect is discussed.
