A novel optical inertial rotation sensor using a semiconductor ring laser (SRL) is proposed. The Sagnac frequency shift was detected for the first time as a beat note by the terminal voltage change of an SRL without branching the circulating optical power. These results show the feasibility of very small, simple optical gyroscopes.
