A fibre Raman amplifier for 1520 nm band WDM transmission is constructed; its gain exceeds 20 dB and its noise figure is ~5 dB. Using the amplifier, the performance of an optically preamplified receiver and the effect of four-wave mixing suppression in dispersion-shifted fibre transmission are examined.
