To date, approaches to coherent optical coding have used fibre-based devices for the coding/decoding operation: placing practical limitations on the ultimate system throughput. Here, a photonic integrated lightwave circuit, based on the imbalanced interferometer in tandem with a modelocked laser diode, is used to demonstrate optical phase encoding/decoding of a 10 GHz pulse stream.
