Whispering gallery mode operation has been observed from a broad-area oxide-confined tunable vertical cavity laser structure which uses an airgap between the top mirror and the semiconductor active layer. Strong index guiding from both the air gap and the AlAs native oxide supports this mode of operation over a wide range of injection currents.

Inspec keywords: laser tuning; surface emitting lasers; semiconductor lasers; laser cavity resonators

Other keywords: VCSEL; whispering gallery mode operation; broad-area oxide-confined laser structure; index guiding; AlAs native oxide; AlAs; tunable laser structure; airgap vertical cavity laser structure; SEL

Subjects: Lasing action in semiconductors; Laser resonators and cavities; Laser resonators and cavities; Design of specific laser systems; Semiconductor lasers; Laser beam modulation, pulsing and switching; mode locking and tuning
