The authors have successfully demonstrated a novel scheme for signal conversion from the non-return-to-zero to return-to-zero formats by using a walk-off balanced nonlinear fibre loop mirror with duty ratio controllability and with no extinction ratio degradation. This scheme may be very useful in all-optical communication systems as an interfacing device for low speed local networks with high speed optical trunk lines.
