A new hybridised process for singlemode optical fibres has been developed. The process consists of overcladding a VAD-derived core rod with a tubular porous body made from commercial silica powder using a compression forming technique. Optical fibres consisting of 95% powder-derived and 5% VAD-derived silica are fabricated with losses of 0.392 dB/km at 1.3 µm and 0.275 dB/km at 1.55 µm.

Inspec keywords: optical fibre losses; chemical vapour deposition; optical fibre fabrication

Other keywords: single-mode optical fibres; silica powder; compression forming; 1.3 micron; 1.55 micron; VAD core rod; tubular porous body; losses; hybridised fabrication; overcladding

Subjects: Optical fibre fabrication, cladding, splicing, joining; Optical fabrication, surface grinding; Chemical vapour deposition; Chemical vapour deposition; Fibre optics; Optical propagation, dispersion and attenuation in fibres
