The authors present a multimedia image coding scheme which is used to segment mixed images into graphics and picture areas. Graphics are coded by the proposed ERLC and pictures are coded by the DCT. While graphics are coded losslessly at 0.5 bit/pixel, pictures can be efficiently coded at the desired quality.
