Previous analytical analyses of quarter-wave shifted DFB lasers have shown a number of stable and unstable mode solutions for high output powers. The authors use the transmission line laser model (TLLM) to investigate the large-signal dynamics and the spectral behaviour during power transients, and predict their effect on fibre communications systems.
