A simple and elegant method is proposed to measure the emission cross-section profile of erbium-doped fibre by using a short piece of erbium-doped fibre with input pump or signal power less than 1 mW. Relative error is within 1% over the whole spectrum. The theoretical and experimental results are discussed.
