A comparison of the performance of single and multichannel optical systems is presented considering long links encompassing standard fibres and dispersion shifted fibres. Coherent detection and direct detection systems and soliton and NRZ pulses are taken into consideration.

Inspec keywords: optical solitons; optical links; optical dispersion; optical fibres

Other keywords: optical fibre capacity; direct detection systems; dispersion shifted fibres; optical links; coherent detection; single-channel optical systems; soliton pulses; multichannel optical systems; NRZ pulses
