Phase-induced intensity noise from weak multiple reflectors is evaluated theoretically and experimentally in amplifier cascades without isolators. Rayleigh backscattering alone significantly limits the number of amplifiers in the span. Theory and experiment agree closely for a six-amplifier cascade.
