Automation of the image shearing measurement technique applied to optical fibre geometry is discussed. The use of digital filters and a multilayer neural network to identity the critical ‘just touch’ condition are compared. Measurements of cladding diameter using both methods are presented which demonstrate the superior repeatability of the neural network approach.
