A novel absolute position optical encoder using two, pseudorandom and periodic, synchronously engraved tracks on a glass slab is presented. The encoded track is read with a GRIN lens and a linear CCD array together with the appropriate signal processing. The spatial coupling of both tracks gives submicrometre resolution when the periodic track is read with the standard Moiré technique.
