A computer simulation of a 2.5 Gbit/s highly dispersive IM/DD optical system is used to determine a laser diode specification for these systems. This specification applies to a laser whose dynamic behaviour is dominated by adiabatic chirp. There is then a strong relationship between the modulated laser spectral lineshape and the resulting dispersion power penalty.
