A novel neural network design, in which nonlinearities are created by feedback, is described. It is called the HOFNET. The design is suitable for optical implementation because it is tolerant of the limited dynamic ranges present in optical systems. An optical system with electronic feedback was constructed and its operation is described.

Inspec keywords: feedback; holographic storage; optical information processing; Fourier transform optics; nonlinear systems; neural nets; computerised pattern recognition

Other keywords: limited dynamic ranges; HOFNET; multiplexed Fourier transform; electronic feedback; memory capacity; optical implementation; high order feedback neural network; pattern recognition; optical systems; Fourier transform hologram recording; neural network design

Subjects: Optical storage; Optical computing techniques; Optical information, image and video signal processing; Holography; Artificial intelligence (theory); Optical logic devices and optical computing techniques; Optical storage and retrieval
