Results demonstrating small signal gain in excess of 25 dB between 1.57 μm and 1.61 μm in Er3+ doped silica fibre pumped at 1.55 μm are presented. An optimum small signal gain of 0.33 dB per mW of pump power and a saturated output of 45 mW for 160 mW of pump power have been achieved.
