Low-loss, single-mode optical fibres have been successfully fabricated by the sol-gel method, using fluorine-doped silica glasses in association with the outdiffusion method. Triangular-index-profile, single-mode optical fibres with a relative index difference of 0·30% have been obtained with an optical loss of 0·43dB/km at 1·30μm wavelength
