The fading rates of the backscatter signal from a single-mode optical fibre under quasimonochromatic pulse excitation are measured experimentally using a homodyne OTDR system. A method of increasing the fading rates to facilitate efficient signal averaging is discussed.

Inspec keywords: optical fibres; time-domain reflectometry; fading

Other keywords: optical time domain reflectometry; fading rates; quasimonochromatic pulse excitation; signal averaging; fading rates increase method; coherent OTDR; backscatter signal; homodyne OTDR system; single-mode optical fibre
