A calorimetric measurement method for the absolute value of total radiant power from a laser diode is described. The radiant power is measured from the difference between input DC power to the laser diode and its heat loss by a calorimeter. The method is also useful for an ordinary semiconductor light source.

Inspec keywords: laser beams; calorimetry; radiometry; semiconductor junction lasers

Other keywords: absolute value; laser beam power measurement; heat loss; laser diode radiation; semiconductor light source; calorimetry; input DC power; total radiant power

Subjects: Photometry and radiometry; Laser beam interactions and properties; Semiconductor lasers; Lasing action in semiconductors; Detection of radiation (bolometers, photoelectric cells, i.r. and submillimetre waves detection); Calorimetry; Optical variables measurement; Laser beam characteristics and interactions
