A method is given which enables one to double the resolution of the transverse interferometric technique for the index profiling of an optical fibre. This method makes use of the measured data of the phase and the deflection function of the fibre. It should find applications in the profiling of single-mode fibres which have small core diameter and the measuring instruments are limited in resolution.
