A relatively simple formula for calculating approximately the single-mode limit (cutoff frequency of LP11 mode) of an optical fibre having an arbitrary refractive-index profile is derived. The normalised cutoff frequencies are computed by using the derived formula for various profiles and are compared with rigorous values, showing fairly good agreement.
