Normalised parameter plots are given enabling prediction of propagation-constant perturbation in diffused optical waveguides due to a thick dielectric cladding. Refractive-index profiles of Gaussian and complementary-error-function form are treated. The variation of the number of propagating modes with time of diffusion is derived.
