An explanation is given for the origination of patterning effects in quantised colour-television pictures. The amplitude of the disturbance is calculated and related to CCIR protection ratios. The choice of a sampling frequency that is synchronised to the subcarrier frequency seems redundant for pulse-code-modulation coding systems with 8 bits per sample.
