A resistively mismatched linear active 2-port can be designed for a given performance factor, so that its power gain is optimum. In this process, a cubic equation has to be solved numerically by hand or machine. Simple and closely accurate analytic solutions for this equation have now been obtained with an error less than 1.5%.
