In a variational impedance formulation, antenna trial functions are modified to satisfy the edge conditions of diffraction theory. For a half-wave antenna, this provides a charge distribution with experimentally verified linear portions. The linearity of the charge distribution appears to be correlated with near-field fluctuations of the antenna.
