With a view to elucidating the difficulties inherent in the treatment of wave propagation in a magnetoionic medium in terms of homogeneous plane waves, the theory of homogeneous plane waves in such a medium is reviewed with particular emphasis on the properties of the time-averaged Poynting vector.
