Error-free 25 Gbit/s optical fibre communication links at 850 nm with vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) via bit error ratio tests are demonstrated. At 25°C through 300 m of fibre a VCSEL dissipated-energy-to-bit-rate ratio of only 122.4 mW/Tbits is achieved. The energy efficient VCSELs reduce the energy required for data and computer communication.
